“I am sorry, Mister Professor, but I cannot take the final exam because my husband and I will be in the Bahamas.”
Well, there’s a new one.

/ December 8, 2007I’ve received variations on this theme several times, particularly during the summer.
“I might miss the exam because I am due to give birth that day.” I let this one slide.
“I will miss the exam because my family is going skiing that week.” Sorry buddy, drop or fail.

/ December 8, 2007Z & HP: Same with me as well. This time it was “I’ll miss the day of the final because my dad needs me in Florida, passing out NASCAR promos.”
Lucky for her, this semester’s class’s final is a take-home.

/ December 11, 2007Just when you thought it couldn’t get any lamer…
Do these people actually think this will work? Do they at least ask to take it early?

/ December 11, 2007These people think it might work because with some teachers it DOES work. And even if it doesn’t work with the teacher, it might work with the dean.

/ December 11, 2007“That’s cool; I’ll be busy writing your F in my gradebook that day anyway”

/ December 12, 2007Superbiff: that’s perfect! 🙂

/ December 12, 2007What happened to the tried and true grandparent death? You’ve got 4 of the GPD cards to throw at any given time and they resort to NASCAR flyers? Hell, I’d fail someone if I found out they were doing that on their own time with no direct ties to my class, much less if they used that as some sort of excuse for not completing work. These people aren’t even trying and deserve to fail for that reason alone.
I really must get Julie to check in more often. She seems to have the exact same students in her classes.

/ December 12, 2007The “F” I wrote today was a guy who came in and really worked hard on his final exam, apparently walking otu the door totally oblivious to the fact that he still needed to turn in the research paper worth over a third of his total grade…

/ December 12, 2007An address, or a map square?
Mike
/ December 12, 2007Either one will work. And don’t be in the grid when the “package” arrives…

/ December 13, 2007::sigh:: Kind of like the guy who, sitting in my office just an hour ago, is looking forward to taking my World Lit class next semester — totally oblivious to the fact that he just blew the Comp II research paper (not putting quotation marks around quotes will do that).

/ December 13, 2007Oooooooooooooooooo.
You need a package too?
While we are on this topic, I have to throw in that I am currently feeling some pain in the Grad Course. We have a real tough prof this time around (not that the others were weak mind you). He is much more direct (better word that vicious) in his posts and is really making us dig to come up with new ideas and defending them. Which can be tough in history, since it has happened and you know the results after a couple hundred years it gets tough to find a new approach. He has already skewered us on being banal and not very varied in our outlook (i.e. we have groupthink going on). I think I scored some points on my definition on Guerrila Warfare as I used my own definition rather than getting out the dictionary, but I am not holding my breath. And this is in US Military History, a topic I thought I knew something about. Whew, this is going to be a long class (but I think I might enjoy it).
