If anyone were brave enough to let anybody else run it…

Interesting, but highly impractical. That many diamond nanoballoons is basically filling the upper atmosphere with very fine abrasive. Every time to try to launch something past that upper atmosphere you’ll abrade the living bejezus out of it. That, and diamond at that level of thickness tends to be much more susceptible to oxidation and UV radiation damage such that the devices will have a high fail rate and you’ll be constantly replacing them. Then you have a high atmosphere disturbance raining fine abrasive down onto the earth every time these parts fails and get blown around them. You’ll frag aircraft engines, moving parts (machine and biological) and make a royal mess of all sorts of things.
I’m not against using nanotechnology to improve things (this is my line of work next to fire science) but this idea, while interesting, is highly impractical and has a high potential for the side-effects outweighing the benefits.
That’s okay, Alex, anybody foolish enough to want to leave the surface of the earth will be punished with mind-control tornadoes… 🙂
Well in that case – I for one welcome our new Shub-Niggurath overlords you have shown us in your previous post.
