Depressed People

Should avoid exposure to negative information.

No, really.  It’s scientifically proven.  And the last thing a person with depression should do is try to think happy thoughts about depressing things.

Hell, where was this info when I was 19?

It seems that the amygdala gets more and more attention these days…I’ve seen a couple of articles recently emphasizing its importance.
On the other hand, imho, it’s not so much the exposure to negative information, but how the brain of the depressed deals with it. Like we talked about it so often, it’s a chemical thing.
As you soo often like to say: “You think too much”. ..:-)

  2. I grok about depressed folk trying to think happy when faced with negative stuff — it don’t work, and actually makes things worse.

What seems to work — based on my own counseling of students and counseling I’ve gotten myself (recently, from a priest) — is to accept the negative as negative, and work through it, little by little. Also, shared stories of surviving negative stuff seems to be an accepted part of the “working through it” process, as found in situations like AA meetings and group homes for battered-women.

  3. Right. The difference being that alkies and abuse victims aren’t necessarily *clinically* depressed — aka, something’s wired wrong in their brain.

According to what I linked, for folks suffering from that, a relentless focus on things that are positive, even to the point of developing “rose-colored glasses,” would seem to be in order.
